SEAI Heat Pump Grants in Ireland

If you are planning to upgrade to a more energy-efficient heating system, the SEAI Heat Pump System Grant can make the switch much more affordable. Homeowners in Ireland may be eligible for grants of up to €12,500, depending on the property type and the work involved.

Heat pumps can offer lower carbon emissions, consistent comfort, and improved energy efficiency, but the home must also be suitable for this type of heating system. That is why insulation levels and heat loss are an important part of the process.

What is the SEAI Heat Pump Grant?

The SEAI Heat Pump System Grant supports the installation of a new heat pump to replace an existing heating system. The grant structure was increased in February 2026 and now includes a bundle of supports that can cover the heat pump itself, certain heating system upgrades, and an additional renewable heat bonus where applicable.

The total support available can be worth up to €12,500 for eligible homes.

Grant Breakdown

The full Heat Pump System Grant can include:

  • Up to €2,000 towards central heating upgrades, where required, such as radiators or underfloor heating

Who Can Apply?

The grant is available for properties owned by eligible applicants, including:

  • Owner occupiers
  • Companies, including owner management companies
  • Registered charities
  • Holiday home owners
  • Approved Housing Bodies
  • Private and commercial landlords of tenanted properties

To qualify, the property must:

  • Have an MPRN
  • Have been built and occupied before 2021
  • Be suitable for a heat pump in terms of heat loss and insulation levels

Before You Apply

1. Make Sure the Home is Heat Pump Ready

A heat pump works best in a home with low heat loss. This means the property needs to retain heat well through its walls, roof, floors, windows and doors.

2. Check if a Technical Assessment is Needed

  • Homes built before 2007: a Technical Assessment may be required unless there is a valid BER showing a Heat Loss Indicator of 2.3 W/(K.m²) or less.
  • Homes built from 2007 onwards: a Technical Assessment is generally not required.

There is a separate €200 grant available towards the cost of a Technical Assessment.

3. Self-Declaration Form

If a Technical Assessment is not required, a Self-Declaration Form may be needed to confirm the property meets SEAI heat loss requirements.

4. Choose How to Proceed

You can either:

  • Apply directly and manage the works yourself using an SEAI registered contractor
  • Use a One Stop Shop, who can manage the upgrade and apply for the grant on your behalf

How the Application Process Works

Step 1: Choose a Registered Contractor

If you are applying directly, you must use an SEAI registered contractor for the work. It is a good idea to compare quotes, check previous jobs, and make sure you receive a written agreement covering cost, timing, payment terms, and warranties.

Step 2: Apply for the Grant Before Any Work Starts

Grant approval must be in place before installation begins. You will need details such as your MPRN, the contractor's registration details, the property type, the year the property was built, and either a Self-Declaration Form or Technical Assessment where required.

Step 3: Complete the Installation

Once approved, the works must be completed within the grant timeline. SEAI states that you have eight months from the date of grant offer to draw down the grant.

Step 4: Arrange a Post-Works BER

A post-works BER assessment is required before payment can be claimed. This must be carried out by a registered SEAI BER Assessor.

Step 5: Submit the Final Documents

When the work is complete, the required paperwork must be returned to SEAI, including the Declaration of Works and Request for Payment forms.

Step 6: Grant Payment

Once SEAI has received and processed the required documentation, the grant is paid into the nominated bank account. Inspections may take place in some cases.

Important Points to Know

  • The grant cannot exceed the total cost of the works
  • Not every home will qualify for the full amount
  • The Renewable Heat Bonus depends on replacing an eligible existing heating system
  • Central heating upgrade support depends on the system design and what additional works are required
  • If replacing an older heat pump that was not previously grant aided, lower grant limits may apply
